Easy Garage Organization
If you’ve been here long enough you know, I am ALL ABOUT EASY DIY. You, too? Don’t get me wrong; I love a good challenge, but sometimes you just need a project to go smoothly and make your life a little easier.
This garage project was that for us this weekend! Finally, a project that can be started and finished all in one day. Ha! Sounds like a dream, right?
Well, I’m here to tell you it was a reality this time. Here’s the blank slate that we started with. Keep in mind all our yard tools were temporarily shoved into our workshop at this point. Out of sight, out of mind. Except the clutter came to mind very quickly when we enter our shop…
We knew we needed to the vertical space on this wall to get things organized and off the ground. We decided to use peg racks (like we use inside our home) to get this wall in better shape.
So, here’s what we did…

Step-by-Step
STEP 1: Measure your wall and figure out what length of board you need.
STEP 2: Buy 1x4 wood boards - Ours are 8 foot long and I painted them white.
STEP 3: Clean the wall. Your wall might already look great, but ours was covered in cobwebs and dirt, so I swept them all up first.
STEP 4: Figure out what height you want the top board to be at. We just held up the longest tool (rake) and made marks on the wall where we wanted it to be height wise on the wall.
STEP 5: Mark where the studs are in the wall and then install the board using 3-inch screws.
STEP 6: Get a rough idea of the layout. We didn’t overthink this. We just lined up the tools with the longest handles and held them up next to each other to figure out how far apart they needed to be. We made marks on the board as we went.
STEP 7: Install the pegs. We used a 1/2-inch Forstner bit to drill the hole and wood glue to secure the peg. (They do make pegs with a screw in them, but we were just using what materials we had left over from other projects.)
STEP 8: Once the glue was set up, I painted the pegs and any screw holes white.
STEP 9: Once the glue was fully cured (the next day) I hung everything up!
And here’s the result…
What do you think? As soon as we finished the project, we agreed that we wish we had done this two years ago! Aside from it visually looking better, we also gained back square footage in our garage. That’s a win for sure!
Every time we walk out the garage, we have a small sense of peace. It’s no long cluttered with everything on the floor or stacked in a corner; everything now has a place. We have more organization plans for this space but for now this will be a huge help.
I hope this inspires you to get on the garage project you have been putting off. Start with something small. A snowball effect may occur, but hey snowballing is a great thing when it comes to organization!
