Interior Door Trim with Character
It’s easy to get caught up in the idea that a fully decorated room is what makes a space complete. Decor is fun and can definitely make a space feel cozy, but I don’t think that it is always the end-all answer. Sometimes it’s the less obvious details that really make a difference in the home.
When considering the interior design our home, I knew I wanted the doors to be part of the overall design. I really wanted character to exist in our home whether it was fully decorated or completely empty. For me, that meant craftsman style trim around the doors and windows…
I put a lot of work into refinishing that vintage door, regular trim just wouldn’t have done it justice. (If you want to learn how I finished the door tap HERE) No! That door is like a classic dress and the trim is like a necklace to it. OK, maybe that’s a little dramatic, but I think you get the point.
What I love about this style of trim is that it simply takes something ordinary, like a door or window, and makes it stand out. I don’t feel like I need to decorate around them because they speak for themselves.
Another great thing about trim is that it can be changed fairly easily. You can remove the old trim or just add to what’s already there. Corey Decker from Saw Dust 2 Stitches just shared a great cost-effective way to upgrade your door casing without removing what is already there. If you do a simple “interior door trim” search on Pinterest, you can find lots of different styles. If you happen to like mine, check out the image below to see what size boards it would take to get the same look. Tip: When you go to the lumber yard, keep in mind that the actual size is different. (For example: a nominal 1x2 is actually 3/4” x 1 and 1/2” in size)
The measurements above are a simple guide to getting the same look without having to rip down boards to a specific size. Our trim is a little more custom than the measurements shown in the image. Our contractor ripped larger sized boards down making actual measurements of our trim pieces are a little different, but not by much. The exact measurements for our trim are as follows: 1 3/4”, 1 1/4”, 5 1/2”, 1 1/4”, and 3 1/2” for the vertical piece.
See what a difference the trim makes? The doorway looks so much larger with the extra pieces above the opening. If you want to add character to your home, this is the way to do it!
